House Republicans Call for Tougher Laws

Regarding Sex Offenders & Sexual Predators

Pooler, Georgia - Representative Buddy Carter (R-Pooler) recently signed on as co-sponsor of sex offender legislation that will be introduced in the 2006 legislative Session by House Majority Leader Jerry Keen (R- St. Simons) and Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram). These Representatives have teamed up with Georgia Sheriffs calling for tougher laws regarding sex offenders and sexual predators.

“Recent events in Georgia and around the country have brought a heightened awareness of the need to protect our children from sexual predators,” Keen said. “Our children are being stalked on the internet, in their schools, and in their neighborhoods and their own homes. We are going to begin the process of taking a look at Georgia's laws and make some real decisions about how we can better protect our children.”

The legislation is aimed at both examining and strengthening Georgia's existing laws regarding sex offenders and sexual predators. Some of the areas up for discussion include the classification of such individuals, state registration requirements, violation penalties and employment restrictions. During the 2005 legislative session, the General Assembly adopted House Bill 188, requiring a sex offenders' photograph to be published in the local newspaper upon release from prison. This law could be expanded to publish such photographs on a yearly basis.

Speaker Richardson added, “We are going to send a strong message to those sex offenders and sexual predators in Georgia that if you harm our children your punishment will be swift and it will be severe. There is no place in our state or in our society for anyone who preys on innocent children.”

There are currently 9,800 individuals on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Sex Offender Registry. There are currently 261 sex offenders on parole and 5,000 on probation in Georgia.

for State House on Wednesday.

Pooler Mayor Buddy Carter announced today that he will qualify for the Republican nomination for the 159 th district of the Georgia House of Representatives on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 .

According to State Law, when he qualifies Wednesday, the 5-term Mayor must relinquish his duties with the City.
